"The Commute," Anne M Bray - One of the few things that can make a grueling commute in an industrial city tolerable is also what is not a part of that landscape -- sky. In her latest exhibition, Anne M Bray explores the various ways in which the vivid glow of a sunset or the reflection of a fiery sky heals the land marred by man.

"Coastal Continuum," Elsie Dye Sims - Artist Elsie Sims looks to nature’s cycle when creating her expressive woodcut designs. Finding inspiration from southern California’s natural landscape, her latest series of large-scale woodcuts portray the push and pull of nature’s course with attention to the vivid color and texture of California’s coast.

"Conceal/Reveal," Elyse Wyman - As an artist who has had her own body image tested by cancer and bilateral mastectomies, Elyse Wyman is interested in the connection between body image and the often hidden, protected interior identity. In her current series, Wyman explores these concealed emotions through bas-relief sculpture.

Cultural Abstraction, Contemporary Figurations: the Work of Seven Contemporary Figurative Painters in Santa Monica.

July 28 - December 4, 2011
An exhibition of work by seven artists from the Santa Monica College Art Mentor Program. Francisco Cabas, Quinne Larson, Abdul Mazid, Kathleen Melian, Jessica Nicol, Elizabeth Weber and Elena Wolek spin the narrative in their work into a thread that joins seemingly incongruent concepts in a visual dialogue, investigating and reporting ideas about cultural identity, gender empowerment, dislocation, consumption and human regeneration. The works display constant movement in delicate balance between figurative and abstract representations.

We Will Not Fail revolves around the October 1, 2001 issue of TIME Magazine, the first instance of Osama Bin Laden on the magazine’s cover and the first issue dedicated entirely to the “war on terror.” In this body of work, Yamin meticulously hand cuts Islamic geometric patterns into photographs of Middle Eastern subjects. In this context, portraits of presumed Arab insurgents, American soldiers serving abroad, local civilians, and architectural structures are simultaneously defaced and embellished by Islamic traditional motifs.

Come enjoy Lisa Phillips Visca’s "Raise Me Up" - a true story about a “moonstruck” couple’s forbidden love, the hilarity and drama from their deeply passionate Italian-Greek families, and how they spent their last day on Earth together. Do you believe in love at first sight? Do you believe in soul mates? Do you believe in eternal love? By the time the final curtain falls, you'll believe. "Raise Me Up" is Visca’s joyful and touching tribute to her parents, Louis and Daphne Padula, capturing their eternal passion and the surreal ending to their classic love story. Set in Staten Island in the early 1950’s, "Raise Me Up" reflects the post-war optimism of the younger generation of the era, and the hope in the air for better times juxtaposed against the older generation and parents still anchored in traditional ethnic, nationalistic, economic, and religious divisions, divisions that mirror the uncertainty of today's political and economic times where the younger generation is fighting its own battle to hold on to that same hope, to fulfill their dreams, and to share their lives with a partner of their choosing.
